Women of Israel

Shalom Grade 5,

I hope you all had a wonderful Shabbat. I am proud of all of you for writing letters to Holocaust Survivors!  You are all modeling our North Stars: Being Responsible For One Another.

This week we will memorialize our Heros (Israeli Soldiers) on Tuesday and Celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut with the world on Wednesday.

Today, I would like all of you to watch this video about Women of Israel (Zionism). When you finish we will play a fun Kahoot about these amazing women.  Women of Zionism

Impacting Holocaust Survivors Today

Especially now, we can make an impact with  Survivors.  If you feel comfortable please read all 6  Holocaust Survivor (see attachments below) bios.  If you have time it would be wonderful if you are able to write a personal letter to each one of them.  I understand you many cut and paste a part of your letter but after reading the different biographies, I hope you will comment on their personal stories. (Suggestions:  talk about your family, what you did over Pesach, hobbies, share what life is like at home, and please ASK them questions as well as Advice). Please use one google doc for all 6 survivors.

If you do not feel comfortable, please write to different letters to the residents of the Lodge.

The idea of this assignment is our North Star – being responsible for one another.

Due end of class Friday,  April 24. When you finish writing the letters, please watch some of the episodes of the Anne Frank Diaries Online:  Do you feel any connection after watching some of the videos?  (Since the subject is the Holocaust, if you do not feel comfortable watching an Anne Frank Video, please write a journal entry, how you felt during Pesach vacation).

Vocabulary test

On Friday, February 7th grade 5 Hebrew class will have a test on the Winter vocabulary that we have been learning. Students will have to complete sentences with vocabulary words from a word bank. I encourage my students to review the vocabulary every so often at home.

New Hebrew Vocabulary

Shalom,

Last week our grade 5 students started a new unit in Hebrew called:” חורף בישראל” (Winter in Israel). We are learning about the weather in Israel during the winter, the changes in nature (animals, vegetation) and of course human adaptation during the winter. After learning about winter in Israel, students will have to prepare their own booklets about winter in Canada. We will conclude the unit by comparing and contrasting the winter in Israel to the winter in Canada.

I am attaching the list of the new vocabulary and encourage my grade 5 students to go over the words at home.

Students Hebrew presentations about Hanukah

This week the students presented Hebrew presentations to our class about Hanukah customs.
Each presentation covered a portion of what we learned about Hanukah. The presentations answered questions such as What is a Kosher Hanukiah? What are the blessings we bless on the first day and all the days afterwards? When should we light the candles? Where do we place the Hannukiah? and Why? for how long should the candles burn? What are the traditional foods? What were the miracles? Who were the Maccabees? What do we celebrate?… and more.

Most students presented in Hebrew, reading texts they made. Students also shared their favourite Hanukah songs with the class.

A big Kol HaKavod to the class, for making presentations in Hebrew! and for an excellent understanding of Hanukah customs.

Adding Hebrew keyboard to computer system or mobile device

Shalom, all!
As we move forward we will be using electronic devices in Hebrew learning.
To add the Hebrew keyboard to the computer system or mobile device please follow these helpful instructions, kindly given by our outstanding computer expert  Josh Max.
If you want to buy stickers to put on a computer keyboard to show the Hebrew letters here is what we recommend:
As well, if someone wants to add the Hebrew keyboard to a computer system or mobile device here are the steps for each device type:
Installing Hebrew keyboard on iPad or iPhone:
  • Go to Settings –> General –> Keyboard –> Keyboards
  • Click “Add new Keyboard…”
  • Scroll down and select “Hebrew”
  • That’s it!  To use the keyboard:
    • When typing select the globe icon in the bottom-left corner of the English keyboard.
    • Push and hold the globe icon and you will be able to select the Hebrew keyboard.
    • To switch back to English, simply push and hold the icon again and select “English” .
    • If you want the nikkud/vowels push and hold on the Hebrew keyboard character and select the what you need.
Installing Hebrew keyboard on Mac
  • Go to Apple menu > System Preferences.
  • Click Language & Text, and then click Input Sources.
  • Select “Hebrew” ( or Ivrit).
  • Be sure to check the “Keyboard and Character Viewer” box as well.
  • At the bottom, select the “Show Input menu in menu bar” checkbox.’
  • To use the keyboard:  At the top-right of your screen, you should now see the Input Menu. Click on the “U.S. Flag” option, and choose “Hebrew/ Israeli flag”.
    • You should now be typing in hebrew
    • To switch back just click and choose the US Flag
    • You may also want to choose “Show Keyboard Viewer” from this menu to see what characters match each key in this keyboard layout.

Installing Hebrew keyboard on Windows

  • First, activate the hebrew keyboard through the Control Panel:
    • Click on the Start button > Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Region and Language.
    • Click the Keyboards and Languages tab, and then click Change keyboards.
    • Under Installed services, click Add.
    • Double-click Hebrew/Ivrit, double-click “Keyboard,” and select the options you want. Then click OK.
  • Next, turn on the Language Bar:
    • While you still have the “Text Services and Input Languages” window open (or open again following steps 1-2 above), click on the Language Bar tab.
    • Make sure the “Docked in the taskbar” option is selected. Click OK to close all control panel windows open.
    • Use the Language Bar to select which language you want to type in:
    • The Language Bar should now appear in the lower-right corner of your computer screen.
    • Click on the language abbreviation – ENG or HEB/ענר – then select the language you want from the menu.
    • You can also use the keyboard shortcut ‘windows key + spacebar’ to quickly switch back and forth.
  • To see what characters are associated with each key:
    • Click the Start button > All Programs > Accessories > Ease of Access. (In Windows XP, it’s called Accessibility.)
    • Then click On-Screen Keyboard to open the On-Screen Keyboard.
    • The On-Screen Keyboard will show you what letters are associated with each key. You can type the letters with your keyboard, or you can click on the letters on the screen.  When you press/click Shift, Ctrl, Alt, etc., you’ll see what new characters can be typed by using these combination keys.

Sukkot Jeopardy! בהכנת שלוש תלמידות

שלום לכולם ומועדים לשמחה!

 

השבוע נהנתה הכיתה ממשחק שהפיקו והכינו שלוש תלמידות במסגרת לימודי היהדות בשעורים שמעביר ד”ר מרקוביץ’.

היום ישב כתבנו לשיחה קצרה עם התלמידה שהובילה, יזמה והנהיגה את ההפקה (כינוי האווטר שלה באינטרנט “פינק איפרין”):

ד”ר שגיא: פינק איפרין, אז בואי וספרי לנו מעט, כיצד הכל התחיל?

פינק איפרין: ד”ר מרקוביץ’ ביקש לדעת מי היה רוצה לעשות משחק ג’פרידי לסוכות, מיד קפצתי על ההזדמנות, אז ישבתי בספריה והכנתי משחק.

ד”ר שגיא: האם היה איזה אתגר או קושי בהכנה?

פינק איפרין: האתגר היה להמציא את השאלות.

ד”ר שגיא: ומה היה כיף?

פינק איפרין: החלק הכיף היה ששתיים מהחברות שלי: מיכל ו”רד סופרים” היו איתי חלק מהזמן ועזרו לי להכין את המשחק, הכל לקח בערך שעה.

וכמובן לראות את כל הכיתה משחקת היה ממש כיף!

חשיבותן של מילים חיוביות – מילים בוראות מציאות

מילים בוראות את מציאות

יתכן וזו אחת התובנות היסודיות ביותר של היהדות, הרי סיפור הבריאה מתחיל במילים שיוצרות עולם והמקורות היהודיים מלאים בדוגמאות לתפיסה זו. כחלק מפעילות חגי ומועדי תשרי, הקדשנו שיעור לפעילות על חשיבותן של מילים טובות ותקשורת חיובית בהשראת ד”ר מרקוביץ’, רכז לימודי היהדות בבית הספר.

התלמידים יכלו לכתוב למה חשוב לדבר בצורה חיובית או פשוט לכתוב מחמאה לחבר, הינה הדברים שכתבו בכיתה:

חשוב לבחור מילים טובות כי זה גורם לכולם להרגיש טוב, וכשהם מרגישים טוב אז גם אתה מרגיש טוב

כי אז אנשים מרגישים סביבך שמחים!

אני אוהבת את… כי היא נחמדה וחכמה

ל… את אדם כיפי, את נחמדה, מצחיקה וחכמה! 

אני אוהב את …. כי הוא נחמד.
