Novel Study, Current Units and Upcoming Events

Next week we’ll be diving into our first novel study. We will be starting the year with a beautiful story of kindness and how it isn’t easy to step outside of our comfort zones. Wonder by R.J. Palacio is rich with themes such as anti-bullying and having compassion, acceptance, and empathy for others.  

Students will use this book for both in class and homework activities over the next month. Our novel study will include discussions on chapter summaries and open ended questions, short quizzes, vocabulary, video journals and a variety of other activities. We will end the unit with a final creative project in which the students create their own interpretation of the novel. This will be a student directed project, giving the students ownership over their culminating task for this novel.

Mark Your Calendars- Innovation Day 2022

Dear Families, 

Innovation Day will take place on April 7th. Without being able to physically welcome you into our classroom, we would like to virtually invite you in!

Students have been working through the Design Thinking process to learn about renewable energy sources and develop a plan for a community space that is inclusive, safe, and takes into account the various gatherings that would normally take place inside, that were moved outdoors because of COVID-19. The challenge is to DREAM BIG! How can we bring electricity to community spaces through renewable energy sources to deal with the ever-growing desire to gather outside? See how we worked through this here.

We can’t wait to share what we’ve come up with!

How do structures withstand natural forces?

Grade 5 have been learning about natural forces and structures. In this week’s final experiment, students designed and built a structure and then simulated a ‘natural’ force… in their home! It was an afternoon of trial and error, tearing down and rebuilding and many, many video calls in the bathroom – who knew that tsunamis and flash flooding could erupt from a bathtub and shower cubicle! All in all, it was a hilarious afternoon that put a smile on all of our faces!

(My personal favourite was the simulation hail storm…using golf balls!)

What’s the ‘Matter’ in our World?

Good morning and welcome back to in-person learning! It was so wonderful to see the students today, not just their heads with cool backgrounds, or minion avatars 😉

Today we will be launching our final Science task for our Matter unit, which will be an integrated project with Language Arts. Students will be exploring some real-world examples of changes in matter, and how those changes can have both positive and negative implications for our environment.

This will be a chance for students to demonstrate their understanding of physical and chemical changes, research skills (including writing a bibliography), media literacy knowledge, and oral presentation skills. In addition to doing their own research, both classes will also be watching the documentary, David Attenborough: A Life on Our Planet. If you have not yet seen this film (it’s on Netflix) I highly recommend it.

Although this will be an in-class assignment, please talk to your children about their work. Have a look at our slides and what is required of them. Over the next few weeks, here are some things you can discuss at the dinner table:

  • What issue have you chosen to explore for your science project?
  • What have you learned so far?
  • Did you know that…. (and share some of your own knowledge with them)
  • If you come across any articles that you think would be interesting to them, or our class, feel free to comment with the link below.

An afternoon of coding with 5B

This afternoon students in 5B started the new math coding unit using code.org. They were engaged and collaborating with one another, helping each other reach new levels in problem-solving in Minecraft.


Another student took the time to present his completed self-built and coded (using youtube tutorials) moving robot. This was part of our Genius Hour project time.

Science Quiz – Thursday October 29

Good afternoon Grade 5!

As you will find in your homework folder this week, we will be having a science quiz next Thursday on the three systems we have learned thus far: Digestive System, Respiratory System, and Circulatory System.

There is a lot of information to review, which is why we wanted to give you as much time to study for this as possible. Fortunately, we have made a sample schedule with suggested review activities to help you organize your time from now until next Thursday.
